In the Philippines, VAMED is represented by Philippine Hospital Projects Development Corporation or PHD. Since it was established in 1998, PHD has built-up its capability in the areas of hospital planning and design, hospital equipment planning, project management and equipment maintenance. Drawing upon hands-on experiences in the implementation of major projects for the Department of Health and equipment consultancy for major hospitals in Manila, PHD has developed a pool of engineers, clinical staff and project management specialists that can be tapped for the execution of any hospital or health care facility undertaking.
PHD executed the first Austrian Government-funded project in the health care sector for the Department of Health (DOH). Its initial undertaking involved the setting up of solid healthcare waste management facilities in 36 government hospitals in the country. In addition, medical equipment in critical areas was also upgraded in 7 hospitals.
The initial project was followed by successive Austrian-funded undertakings forthe upgrading of public health care facilities under the Austria-Philippines Industrial Cooperation in the Health Sector.
All projects were executed by Filipino engineers and clinicians and were completed ahead of schedule to the full satisfaction of the clients.
The four projects under the DOH amounting to more than US$ 65.0 million were the result of bilateral discussions under the health cooperation agreement. As domestic competence in project management was being developed, PHD in 1999 began to make inroads into providing consulting services for health care facility development.
The transfer of know-how in the execution of health projects and subsequently in the planning and development of health care facilities continued between Vamed Engineering and PHD. As competence in these areas was enhanced, the company was eventually tapped by VAMED to support the implementation of projects overseas, particularly in Malaysia, Vietnam, Nigeria, and Ghana.
In 2006, PHD ventured into Biomedical Services and formed Biomedical Equipment Maintenance Center or BEMC, a certified ISO:9001-2000 for Quality Management Process Facility. It has expanded its client base tremendously in the last 3 years.
